So You Think You Can Dance Season 4 on DVD

Here we are, my So You Think You Can Dance Season 4 DVDs - due to my interest level this set took me longer to make than Season 3 but I think they turned out quite well. Once again, I spend an incredible amount of time and effort making these discs, so if you want to make copies for all of your friends please feel free to do so - however, if you're going to re-distribute these discs yourself to other fans you must do it at a reasonable price! These are in essence just DVD-R/DVD+R discs and are very cheap and easy to buy in-store, so if you're going to make more copies for people at a fee do it fairly and at a price that is as close to the cost of the discs and the labor/electricity needed. I did not create these discs with the intention of anyone turning over any real profit, and if you catch anyone out there re-distributing these discs at a ridiculous price please contact me.

Alright, so for some technical specs. on the discs - last year for Season 3 I stuck all 23 episodes onto 6 discs, this meant that there were usually 4 episodes a disc. My initial plan was to make my Season 4 discs like Season 3 and spread them over 6 discs, however, fans will notice that pairs started doing two dances early in the competition than usual - this meant the episodes were longer. Since the episodes were longer it meant if I tried to cram all 23 episodes on 6 discs it would look bad - a few discs would have at most 5 hours and 50 minutes on a disc and using a lower bitrate for the video. So this season I decided to break things up into 11 discs instead, and the video quality is much better. Unfortunately because of that this set will cost more than Season 3 did, but quality is much improved - plus I added some extra stuff to disc 1.

DVD information & Details:

All 23 Episodes of Season 4 on 11 standard 4.7 GB DVD-R/DVD+R (if you have a very specific preference as to which, please let me know).
Disc 1 has the first 3 episodes plus some extras, all subsequent discs have 2 episodes each.
Audio Encoded at 192 kb/s
All video is encoded in widescreen. Each episodes was framserved with black borders to accomodate for tv overscan (so that your tv doesn't cut off the edges). To see what I'm talking about look at the screencaps below.
All episodes encoded from episodes downloaded via bittorent.
Video is encoded at 29.9 fps in NTSC.
Menu & Chapters: Since Fox created downloadable wallpapers for all the dancers this year, each disc uses a mix of those wallpapers as the background in the menu. Menu is in standard 4:3 ratio and the main theme music plays in the background.
For Season 4 I've gone and chaptered the audition episodes at each audition shown and choreography rounds. Each week's performance and result episodes are chaptered at each dance, practice, and judges' comments. Refer to a screencap for a visual.
All discs are Region 0, meaning they should play on any dvd player that can play DVD-R or DVD+R.
All discs are burned on what I consider reliable and brand-name media. At the moment of writing this that means Sony & TDK.

Disc 1 - Episode 1-3

Background: Sandra Colton of SYTYCD Season 1 fame :) I used Sandra when Fox first released the wallpapers and they didn't have any of the contestants from Season 4 yet.
Contains Episode 1-3, the first 3 audition city episodes.
Includes a few extra videos: SYTYCD dancers from Season 1-3 on American Idol Gives Back and the piece Wade did for Dancing With the Stars. I would've stuck these on the last disc but at the time I was still planning on putting all of season 4 on 6 discs, following that logic disc 1 would've had the least video time, however I didn't want to re-do the dvd after I changed my mind so I left it as is.

I made a small mistake while chaptering. There's one chapter on episode 5 listed as "the choreo performed" which shows the dancers doing Napoleon and Tabitha's choreography. I originally just put "the choreo performed" because I was going to go back and re-name it, but I forgot and I still couldn't come up with a better name so that's what it became.

The last episode, episode 23 was made from an AVI file that had a section of Courtney's goodbye speech all of a sudden go into 4:3 aspect ratio. The original file was a letterbox type file with the borders, fortunately I had downloaded another file that was completely in widescreen (I believe it was aired by Much Music) - however the colors were a little off. So what I did was a bit of a cut and splice, that one little section that was replaced with the video from the Much Music version and there's a slight pause when it cuts to it, and back from it. It's noticable, but I thought it was better than having it cut suddenly to a full frame video for only a few seconds.
